Shingu Yukitomo (新宮行朝)

Yukitomo SHINGU was a busho (Japanese military commander) of the Sengoku period. His original name was Ujihiro HORIUCHI. He was a legitimate son of Ujiyoshi HORIUCHI of Shingu-jo Castle in Kii Province (said to be Ujiyoshi's sixth son or younger brother). His main name was Seiwa-Genji clan. His family line was one of the Seiwa-Genji lines, called the lineage of Kawauchi-Genji, and the founder was MINAMOTO no Yukiie, who was the tenth son of MINAMOTO no Tameyoshi, the second-generation successor of MINAMOTO no Yoshiie's. The lineage of the Horiuchi family in Kumano Shingu-jo Castle, his birth place, and its clans are detailed in Kansei choshu shokafu (Kansei Continued Lineage of the Edo bakufu). His juryomei (honorary titles) was Wakasa Province.

Biography

He became a vassal around the time when Hideyoshi TOYOTOMI unified the country, and in the Battle of Sekigahara, he joined the Western army, and lost.

When Yoshinaga ASANO was suppressed in Wakayama-jo Castle in Kii Province, Yukitomo was given 500 koku, but was dissatisfied with this reward, and resigned.

In the Siege of Osaka, he lead 300 men for the restoration of the former territory and became a Yoriki (lower ranked samurai) of Harufusa ONO, and also joined the troop of Nagatsugu ITO. He gave distinguished service in the Battle of Tenoji-Temple, Okayama in the Osaka Natsu no Jin (Summer Siege of Osaka), and by stirring up the uprise of Kishu Province, he created a chaos for the former lord, Asano clan.

When Osaka-jo Castle fell, although he managed to escape once, he was caught by Shigemasa MATSUKURA's troops in Yamato Province, and was held captive. Then he was pardoned for his third youngest brother, Ujihisa HORIUCHI, saving Senhime and became a vassal of Takatora TODO of the Tsu Domain in Ise Province. A different view says that he served for the Katagiri clan of Tatsuta Domain in Yamato Province for 70 koku.
